Katie lost a heartbreaker!
Katie fell to Pliskova 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the first round of San Jose.
Katie had 3 aces and 5 DF's, but Pliskova had 8 aces and 16 DF's! Katie won only 32 percent of her second serves, but Pliskova won only 29 percent. In other words, this was an ugly match.
They were a combined 14 breaks of serve in the match. Katie won more points, 93-92, but lost the match. I hate it when that happens!
Katie dominated the first set, but Pliskova took a 5-1 lead in the second set. Then Katie rallied and Pliskova choked. Katie won 4 straight games. Pliskova broke Katie, but then Katie broke right back to force a tiebreak.
Katie led 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 in the breaker, but Pliskova won the final 3 points.
They traded breaks of serve twice, but Pliskova broke one last time for a 5-3 lead and then held to finish it off in 2:15.
Tough loss Katie and on her birthday. Happy Birthday Katie! Hopefully she will be back even stronger in her next tournament.
